The Telde City Council joins this Thursday the commemoration of World Stroke Day to raise citizen awareness about knowing the symptoms, preventing risk factors, and acting quickly upon any suspicion.

Telde's Department of Health, led by Janoa Anceaume, is disseminating a key message: identifying warning signs and acting immediately can make a difference and reduce the sequelae of this medical emergency. A stroke, a sudden alteration of blood circulation in the brain, requires immediate attention, as time is crucial for recovery.
According to data released by the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) in 2024, Spain registers around 90,000 new stroke cases annually, with over 23,000 deaths. The SEN reminds us that symptoms such as loss of strength on one side of the body, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, vision loss, or a sudden, intense headache are warning signs.
A simple way to detect these symptoms is to ask the person to smile, raise both arms, and say a simple sentence. If facial asymmetry, inability to keep both arms raised, or speech difficulties are observed, it is essential to call 112 immediately. One should not wait for symptoms to disappear or attempt to transport the person by private means.
Prevention is key and begins with daily habits. The SEN emphasizes controlling cardiovascular risk factors such as maintaining adequate blood pressure, managing diabetes and cholesterol, avoiding tobacco, engaging in regular physical activity, and following a balanced diet. High blood pressure is a major risk factor, making regular health check-ups particularly advisable.
