The meeting, held at the headquarters of the Government of Canarias, also included the Councilor for Transport, Miguel Rodríguez, and representatives of the municipal taxi sector, Rafael Santana (president of TaxiTelde) and Germán Pérez (Cooperativa Doramas). The main objective was to advance in the search for alternatives to unblock the implementation of the new fares, approved in March and awaiting entry into force after the unfavorable report from the Pricing Commission.
This meeting follows up on the efforts initiated by Mayor Peña, who has defended the municipal proposal and requested a solution from the regional executive for this demand, which has been worked on for months with sector professionals. The initiative is supported by an economic study promoted by the Department of Transport, led by Miguel Rodríguez, which aims to adapt prices to current service costs.
During the meeting, the Directorate General of Commerce and Consumption presented three possible scenarios for moving forward. The first alternative is the contentious-administrative route to appeal the resolution of the vice-counselor Alfonso El Jaber, which dismissed the municipal proposal. The second option is to wait for the modification of Decree 64/2000, which regulates the approval of prices and could offer greater municipal autonomy by the end of the year. The third proposed path is to await the approval of the so-called Canarian Single Fare (T5), planned for February, to understand how Telde's update could fit into the new regional framework.
Juan Antonio Peña reaffirmed his commitment to taxi drivers and the defense of the update approved by the plenary. He stated that the City Council will continue working to find a viable solution and that the sector's representatives will be the ones to evaluate the alternatives and decide on the path forward. The mayor emphasized that the Consistory will support the decision made by the taxi drivers, whether it be the judicial route, waiting for regulatory modification, or the future Canarian Single Fare, stressing the importance of having all available information.
The City Council insists that the plenary approval in March was the result of joint work with the sector and a specific economic analysis, and maintains its willingness to defend the proposal and promote the necessary institutional efforts. With this meeting, Telde keeps the dialogue open with the Government of Canarias to respond to the sector's demands and expedite the implementation of the new fares.
