Children learning about agriculture and local produce at a summer campus in Tegueste.

The municipality of Tegueste is launching the CHIKITA HUERTA campus this summer, aimed at 25 children aged 6 to 12, to introduce them to the primary sector and local produce.

The campus, managed by the Social Action Department of the Tegueste City Council and promoted by the Association of Farmers and Artisans Market of La Villa de Tegueste, with the collaboration of GMR Canarias, will take place over two weeks in August: from the 18th to the 22nd and from the 25th to the 29th. The goal is to familiarize children with agriculture, livestock, healthy eating, and sustainability through practical experiences.
Activities will primarily be held at the Tegueste Farmers and Artisans Market facilities, but will also include visits to farms, vineyards, and cheese dairies to learn firsthand about the production of Canarian food products. The initiative, supported by GMR Canarias's Volcanic Xperience program, aims to instill the value of local produce and its origins.
The program combines learning and play with activities such as "Run, Goat, Run" and "Flavors with a Face," which reveal the producers and landscapes behind each food item. Farm visits will allow children to explore a cheese dairy, learn about grape cultivation, participate in harvesting strawberries and watercress, and understand daily farm work.
It will conclude with family days like "La Natural," dedicated to healthy eating, and "Engofiados," a workshop for making mojos and gofio balls. These activities aim to reinforce values such as environmental respect, responsible consumption, and food waste reduction.

"Promoting local produce is not just about making it known, but also about explaining everything that lies behind it: territory, producers, knowledge, landscape, and rural economy. CHIKITA HUERTA allows us to convey these values to future consumers through experiences that children can live, remember, and later share with their own families."

Juan Antonio Alonso Barreto · CEO of GMR Canarias

"Through the Volcanic Xperience program, we reinforce an action designed for the agri-food promotion of the municipality through a fun and practical experience with our children. They will not only learn about different products but will also visit the places where they are produced, talk to the people involved, harvest, prepare, and learn to consume more consciously, becoming new advocates for our local products."

Norberto Padilla Melián · Mayor of Tegueste

"CHIKITA HUERTA aims for summer to also be an opportunity for learning, coexistence, and enjoyment for all children. From the Social Action area, we want to provide resources that aid work-life balance while offering quality educational experiences that allow children to interact, discover new things, and feel like active members of their community."

Érika Hernández Acosta · Councillor for Social Action of the Tegueste City Council

"Tegueste maintains a historical and very close relationship with agriculture and the primary sector. We want our children to know that heritage from within: to enter a farm, talk to those who cultivate, understand the cost of producing food, and grasp why consuming local produce also means caring for our landscape, our economy, and our identity as a municipality."

Maura Martel Cruz · Councillor for Local Development of the Tegueste City Council

"the central role played by the Market in this project, serving as a space for learning and coexistence during these two weeks, a space that represents the direct link between those who produce food and those who consume it, including our children."

Nieves Rebenaque Tremps · President of the Association of Farmers and Artisans Market of La Villa de Tegueste
The initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, promoting quality education, reduced inequalities, sustainable communities, and responsible consumption. The collaboration between the Tegueste City Council, the Farmers Market Association, and GMR Canarias aims to provide an educational and summer entertainment experience.
