The XXIV Canarias–Madeira International Regatta will set sail from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Tuesday, September 1st, at 12:00 PM. The competition, jointly organized by the Clube Naval do Funchal and the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, will feature approximately 150 sailors aboard thirty offshore cruising vessels, ranging from 11 to 16 meters in length, hailing from Canary Islands and Portugal.
Participants will cover 262 nautical miles (approximately 485 kilometers) to Madeira. Weather forecasts predict northeasterly winds of 15 to 20 knots and waves of 1.5 meters, which could allow the first boats to arrive at their destination in about thirty-five hours, while the last might take up to forty-eight. The arrival of the first competitors is expected between September 3rd and 4th, with the awards ceremony scheduled for the 5th at the headquarters of the Clube Naval do Funchal.
The Canarias–Madeira International Regatta has a long history, with its first edition held in 1978. Initially organized by the Clube Naval do Funchal, it evolved into a joint collaboration with nautical clubs from the Canary Islands. Since 1991, the starting port has rotated between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arrecife, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with the arrival always in Funchal. Considered the oldest sporting competition fostering exchange between the two archipelagos, it has seen thousands of sailors compete.
The organization of this XXIV edition is supported by various entities, including the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Federação Portuguesa de Vela, the Real Federación Española de Vela, the Associação Regional de Vela da Madeira, the Asociación Canaria de Clubes Náuticos, the Marina Portuguesa, the Marina de Funchal, and the Ports Administration of Madeira.
