Tegueste renovates its roundabouts with sustainable landscaping and water saving
The City Council replaces grass with species adapted to the climate to reduce water consumption and maintenance needs.

The Tegueste City Council has initiated a landscaping project in the Tamarco and Las Flores roundabouts to adapt them to the municipality's water saving and efficiency needs.
The landscaping intervention in the Tamarco and Las Flores roundabouts in Tegueste aims to adapt these spaces to the municipality's current needs, prioritizing water saving and efficiency. The project, described as simple and cost-effective, seeks to implement a more sustainable and climate-appropriate gardening model.
The plan includes the complete removal of natural grass from the main areas and corresponding islets of the roundabouts. In its place, gravel will be installed over weed-blocking mesh, a solution designed to significantly reduce maintenance requirements and prevent unwanted vegetation growth. Additionally, highly resilient plant species adapted to the local climate with very low water needs will be introduced, combined with more ornamental and colorful elements, following the same landscaping style used in other recently conditioned areas of the municipality.

The Mayor of Tegueste, Norberto Padilla, emphasized that the initiative aims not only to refresh the appearance of the roundabouts but also to advance towards more efficient public resource management. The goal is for the municipality's green spaces to be climate-adapted, requiring less water and maintenance, without compromising their visual appeal.

Meanwhile, the Councilor for Municipal Services, Javier Galván, explained that the intervention also incorporates measures to improve irrigation system efficiency. The project includes the installation of a localized drip irrigation network, leveraging and reusing existing elements such as the programmer, solenoid valve, and valve boxes. This approach optimizes available resources and reduces water consumption. Galván added that the combination of hardy species with gravel and weed mesh will decrease maintenance needs and enhance the efficiency of the Municipal Services staff, ensuring sustainability in post-intervention management and upkeep.
