The Canarian Parliament has been the scene of an intense debate on pollution and discharges in the archipelago, where a socialist deputy has criticized the Government's inaction, which has defended its environmental management.

During this Tuesday's plenary session, a regional deputy from the PSOE expressed concern about the environmental problems affecting the islands, stating that, in some areas, citizens are bathing in contaminated waters. This statement prompted a response from the Minister of Ecological Transition, who reminded the opposition party of its participation in the Government during the previous legislature.
The deputy questioned the measures implemented by the Ministry in the last two years to address the demands arising from the demonstrations on April 20, 2024, organized by the Canarias tiene un límite collective. She pointed out that, beyond studies and plans, concrete actions have been scarce.
Among her criticisms, she highlighted the delay in processing the Biodiversity Law, which was submitted for public information three years late and through an urgent procedure that, in her opinion, limits citizen participation. She also accused the Executive of weakening the Climate Change Law and of failing to advance in the implementation of an eco-tax or in improving waste management.

"We have absolutely not improved in controlling discharges into the sea, and in some parts of the Canary Islands, citizens are still bathing in filth, literally."

The Minister of Ecological Transition, for his part, defended the Government's work and criticized the PSOE for its stance, accusing them of “waving the banner in opposition” without having acted when they held government responsibilities. He listed measures such as promoting the regulation of holiday rentals, accelerating the implementation of renewable energies and planning their territorial development, as well as advances in the future Biodiversity Law.
He also reproached the socialists for not having adopted measures during the previous legislature to ensure energy supply, despite the generation deficit being known since 2021. According to the minister, this inaction has contributed to the blackouts recorded on islands such as La Gomera or La Palma.
