The Centro de Educación Infantil y Primaria (CEIP) Puntagorda, located in the municipality of Puntagorda on La Palma, has been awarded the first national prize in the School Coexistence and Well-being Projects category for municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. This recognition highlights the center's commitment to creating more inclusive, participatory, and emotionally secure educational environments, as reported by the Ministry of Education.
Additionally, three other Canarian centers have received distinctions. The CEIP Camino Largo in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife) secured the first prize in Reading Plans for Primary schools in municipalities with over 5,000 inhabitants. The Instituto de Educación Secundaria (IES) Granadilla de Abona, also in Tenerife, earned second prize in the same category for Secondary schools. Finally, the IES El Calero in Telde (Gran Canaria) was recognized in the sustainable educational centers category.
These awards position the Canary Islands as one of only four autonomous communities, alongside Andalusia, Aragon, and the Valencian Community, to be featured in all three award lists. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Madrid on May 18.
The CEIP Puntagorda's award-winning project, 'Building the school we want. A school that cares and listens. A school for everyone,' focuses on placing students at the core of school life, adapting the environment to their needs. This initiative has transformed educational spaces and dynamics to enhance overall well-being and coexistence, actively involving students, families, and staff.
Meanwhile, the IES El Calero has been honored for its environmental education project 'Together we are stronger,' developed within the framework of the RedECOS network of sustainable centers in the Canary Islands. This program encourages student participation in recycling, energy saving, and environmental care activities, including campaigns to reduce plastic use, the installation of a composter, and an ecological school garden.
The CEIP Camino Largo was recognized for its reading plan 'Every page, one more step on the path,' aimed at improving linguistic competence and reading habits. This cross-curricular project involves families and combines various activities such as bookface contests and participation in the Pequeños Gigantes de la Lectura project. The IES Granadilla de Abona, with its reading plan 'Of follies and other stories,' secured the second national prize, integrating reading interdisciplinarily and using digital tools for comprehensive reading comprehension.
