The Minister of Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice, and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto, informed the Governing Council about these grants. The primary objective is to cover the infrastructure and operational expenses associated with this essential service.
The direct beneficiaries of these subsidies are the Bar Associations of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de La Palma, and Lanzarote, as well as the Procurators' Colleges of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. These bodies are responsible for compensating the professionals on the duty roster who provide legal defense to individuals with insufficient financial means.
The budget for 2026 also includes an increase in the remuneration scales for these professionals. Following a 15% rise applied in 2025, a 7% increase has been implemented this year. The process is expected to conclude in 2027 with an additional 8% increase, resulting in a cumulative rise of 30% in the remuneration modules, in accordance with the agreement to update amounts based on the CPI.
Furthermore, the cost of free legal aid in Canarias includes legal assistance for migrants arriving by sea to the islands' coasts, a service for which the State has yet to make payment.
