Minister of Health, Esther Monzón, outlined during her address at the Canary Islands Parliament Plenary the actions implemented during the legislature to optimize the working conditions for the more than 40,000 professionals of the Canary Health Service (SCS). A 7.5 percent increase in the Human Resources budget was highlighted, reaching 2.615 billion euros, allocated to salary improvements and personnel policies.
The SCS has increased its staff by 6,225 workers, a 20 percent rise, to align resources with population demands. Health management teams across the islands are making significant efforts to cover essential staffing needs, ensuring patient care is not compromised and surgical and consultation waiting lists do not regress.
A milestone has been achieved in staff stabilization with the consolidation of 9,000 positions through merit-based selection, covering 122 professional categories, including physicians, family doctors, pediatricians, nurses, and auxiliaries. The stabilization process through competitive examination continues, with 76 out of 111 exams already held.
Concurrently, the Public Employment Offer (OPE) for 2025 is being organized, which will feature nearly 8,300 positions, 1,225 of which are designated for various medical and specialist roles. The minister also emphasized the hiring of 800 doctors over the past three years as part of a talent retention program.
In terms of training, the capacity for specialist training via MIR has increased by 19 places for the 2026-27 academic year, reaching 504 accredited positions, the largest offer in the SCS's history.
Economically, the fifth-grade Professional Career salary supplement has been implemented, and one hundred percent of the objective achievement supplement has been paid. Benefits for Temporary Incapacity and new categories of statutory personnel have also been updated.
Regarding technological improvements, the E-curriculum is under development, an IT tool to streamline transfer competitions and selection processes, currently in its testing phase. Modifications to the hiring list call system are also underway.
