The Government of the Canary Islands has officially established an Equality Committee, a new parity body tasked with monitoring and correcting potential gender gaps within the archipelago's Public Administration.

This committee, whose establishment was formalized with its publication in the Official Gazette, will comprise experts and trade union representatives. Its primary mission will be to scrutinize, evaluate, and rectify the actions of the Public Administration regarding gender issues, ensuring equity at all levels.
The main function of this new body is to act as a monitoring and follow-up entity for the 2026-2029 Equality Plan. It will be responsible for ensuring that each measure approved in the Sectoral Equality Plan is implemented within the stipulated deadlines through continuous and effective oversight.
Among its responsibilities, the committee will analyze the evolution of the wage gap, assess the effectiveness of work-life balance measures, and verify that access to positions of responsibility is equitable across the entire Canarian administration. Furthermore, it will have the authority to identify new needs or unproductive measures, initiating direct actions and proposing adjustments to the original plan to ensure its efficiency.

The main objective is for the Canary Islands to lead the way in labor equity within the public sector, serving as a benchmark for the archipelago's private business fabric.

The constitutive session of the Equality Committee is scheduled for no later than May 30, 2026, although its effective activity is expected to commence from May 10. With the activation of this body, the Canary Islands aims to take a definitive step towards transparency and ensure that equality becomes a cross-cutting principle rather than a mere statement of intent.
