The Canary Islands Government's Department of Education organized the 3rd Regional Meeting of Rural Schools, an event that gathered around sixty representatives from the educational sector in Gran Canaria. The main objective was to analyze the current situation, share experiences, and discuss the challenges and opportunities these centers face in the future.
The event included participation from teachers, management teams, educational inspectors, university students, and other professionals from all the islands, establishing itself as a key space for knowledge exchange and best practices in rural education.
Rural schools are fundamental to the Canary Islands' educational system, grouping 121 single-teacher schools through 24 Rural School Collectives (CER). They currently educate over 2,300 students, ensuring access to education in areas far from urban centers and contributing to social cohesion and population retention.
A key focus of the meeting was teacher training. The Director General of Center Administration, Schooling, and Complementary Services, David Crego, emphasized the Department's commitment to this model and the importance of such meetings for learning new methodologies and improving teaching practices. The participation of teachers from Andalusia broadened the exchange of experiences.
Multigrade education, where students of different ages share learning spaces, is a hallmark of these schools. This model promotes flexible methodologies, personalized attention, and positive results, as highlighted by the Department.
As a novelty, this edition included university students of Pedagogy to introduce them to the daily reality of rural schools and their unique characteristics, fostering closer ties between higher education and these centers.
During the event, projects were shared, such as “Sustainability in a biosphere reserve from the rural school” in Lanzarote, and “Strengthening the university. Weaving rural education” in Tenerife. Topics of positive coexistence and community well-being were also addressed.
