The Pegaso Team, a specialized unit in aeronautical management and operational security of the Civil Guard based in Gando, will be responsible for overseeing the airspace during the Rally Islas Canarias. This operation seeks to prevent incidents arising from unauthorized drone flights, especially in an event that will feature a significant aerial presence of helicopters and other authorized drones.
The unit has been making final preparations at key locations such as the roundabout in Moya, an emblematic spot for rally enthusiasts in Gran Canaria. The primary concern is public safety, as interference from unauthorized drones could cause collisions with emergency aircraft, organizational aircraft, or those from the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
“"Although if a crime occurs, there would be civil liability, which would have to be covered."
To carry out this work, the Pegaso Team will use advanced devices such as the aeroscope, which allows them to detect drone signals, locate their exact coordinates, and identify the pilot, even knowing the device's serial number. They will also employ drone inhibitors, capable of intercepting and securing unauthorized devices.
Regulations prohibit the use of drones without permission in almost all of the island's airspace during the four days of competition. Offenders face fines that can reach up to 225,000 euros. The Civil Guard will also be responsible for ground safety, regulating traffic and ensuring that the public remains in designated and marked safe areas, with inspection convoys preceding each section.
