The Canary archipelago is preparing for a May bank holiday weekend with significant restrictions on commercial openings, due to the celebration of Labor Day and Mother's Day, leaving only one business day for shopping on most islands.

The month of May begins with a national holiday, May 1st, Labor Day, which directly impacts the commercial opening calendar across all the Canary Islands. This day, as well as Sunday, May 3rd, coinciding with Mother's Day, has not been authorized for store openings on any of the islands.
Each year, the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands establishes the ten Sundays and holidays on which commercial establishments can operate, without special hours being set. The calendar for the year 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands in December, shows variations depending on the island, adapting to the specific characteristics of each one.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, there are five commercial zones with different opening hours: two of them operate throughout the year, while the remaining three operate exclusively during the cruise season, which runs from October 1st to April 30th. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a single tourist zone that allows commercial opening throughout the year.
Below are the authorized opening days for Sundays and holidays on each island for the year 2026:
  • El Hierro: January 4, April 2, August 15, October 12, November 2, and December 6, 8, 13, 20, and 27.
