By May 2026, a total of 10,708 workplace accidents were recorded in the Canary Islands, representing a 3.7% decrease compared to the 11,123 registered in the same period of the previous year. This data comes from the monthly Statistics of Work Accidents published by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
The reduction is observed across all severity categories. Minor accidents decreased by 3.2%, while serious or very serious accidents saw a drop of 52.7%. Regarding fatal incidents, there were 6 recorded up to May 2026, compared to 15 in the same period of 2025.
By provinces, the number of work accidents also decreased. In Las Palmas, the reduction was 4.2%, and in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it was 3.1%, compared to the cumulative data up to May 2025.
The Incidence Index, which measures workplace accidents per 100,000 affiliated workers, stood at 197.1 in the first five months of 2026. This index is slightly higher than in April (194.9 per 100,000 affiliates). This calculation considers workers who contribute and have professional contingencies recognized.
The construction sector shows the highest incidence, with 420 accidents per 100,000 workers, followed by agriculture (322.4). By May 2026, construction recorded 1,267 accidents with absence from work, and agriculture recorded 329. The industry sector had an index of 302.3 (650 accidents). The services sector, despite having the highest number of incidents (7,037), presents the lowest index (171.7) due to its larger workforce.
