Gómez, currently an unattached member of the Parliament of Canarias, criticized the “repeated non-compliance” with parliamentary agreements. She recalled that both in 2017, at the initiative of the Popular Party, and in 2023, the autonomous Chamber urged the Government of Canarias to promote this council, receiving broad support in both votes.
“"Two legislative periods have passed, two agreements have been approved, and the result remains the same: none. And that is not a technical issue; it is a matter of political will."
The former deputy, who left Vox in 2024 believing the party had neglected Canarias during the migration crisis, has maintained her commitment to the creation of this council. Previously, while still a member of Vox, her initiative was dismissed by the national leadership, which argued that “the mere fact of being Gypsy is not a cause for vulnerability, nor a minority requiring special guardianship from public authorities, and therefore they have the way of life they choose.”
Gómez highlighted that Canarias is one of the few autonomous communities that has not yet established this council, despite the support from various Gypsy associations, social entities, and state organizations. In the presence of representatives from Gypsy associations of Canarias at the parliamentary plenary session, the former deputy emphasized the role of institutions as spaces for citizen representation.
Finally, she demanded that counselor Candelaria Delgado immediately convene these entities and establish a concrete timeline for the council's creation before the end of the current legislative period. She stressed that “equality is not declared, it is built,” and that it is time for Canarias to stop being on the list of communities that have not complied with this measure.
