The University of La Laguna (ULL) has reaffirmed its strong international reputation by firmly establishing itself among the top 20 academic institutions in Spain, according to the results of the 2026 edition of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). In this rigorous state-level evaluation, the Tenerife-based educational center has secured the 18th position, demonstrating the competitiveness of its classrooms.
This achievement not only reinforces the ULL's leadership within the autonomous community of Canary Islands but also places it in the exclusive top 3.1% of universities worldwide. Globally, the institution has reached the 643rd position out of over 21,200 higher education centers analyzed across five continents.
Within the national context, the University of La Laguna ranks 18th among the 53 Spanish universities included in this select international list. This performance places it "clearly" above the average for higher education in the country. Expanding the perspective to Europe, the ULL solidifies its position among the top 250 universities, achieving the 245th spot.
Unlike other rankings, the CWUR's classification is recognized for its rigor and methodology, which eschews subjective opinion surveys or self-reported data. It is based exclusively on quantitative variables and measurable objectives across four fundamental pillars: the quality of education received by students, the employability of its graduates, the excellence of its teaching staff, and the overall performance of its research team.
The ULL has particularly excelled in the scientific research category, an area that assesses the volume of annual scientific output, the impact of publications, and the number of international citations. Thanks to these indicators, the Canarian university has ranked 610th globally in research. The CWUR report further emphasizes the strategic value of Spain's public universities, which account for 47 of the 53 national places in the ranking, reaffirming the Tenerife institution as a driver of knowledge, science, and innovation in the islands.
