Road safety in Spain has undergone significant changes, particularly affecting motorcyclists. One of the main concerns revolves around the mandatory nature of the V-16 beacon, the luminous device that replaced emergency triangles on January 1st. While it is a standard for cars on interurban roads, the regulations for two-wheeled vehicles differ.
“"In the case of motorcycles, it is not mandatory to carry the V-16 beacon."
Despite not being mandatory, national and Canarian authorities strongly recommend its use. Its compact size makes it easy to store, and its signaling capability dramatically improves a motorcyclist's visibility in case of breakdown or accident, protecting their physical integrity in low visibility conditions.
Beyond new devices, the most common and costly infraction for motorcyclists remains the incorrect use of the helmet. It's not just about wearing it, but about keeping it fastened and adjusted at all times, even during brief stops. It is common for some riders to unfasten or remove their helmet when stopping at a traffic light, especially in urban areas of the Canary Islands where the heat can be intense.
Since the new Traffic Law came into force in March 2022, the consequences for this offense have become more severe. Previously, it entailed the loss of 3 points, but current regulations increase the penalty to the withdrawal of 4 points from the driving license, maintaining the economic fine at 200 euros.
It is important to highlight the difference in responsibility between rider and passenger. If the rider drives without a helmet, the full penalty (economic and points) falls on them. However, if the passenger violates the rule, the 200 euro fine is imposed on the rider, but without the loss of points. This distinction underscores the priority of responsibility for the person operating the vehicle.
To avoid losing points, it is crucial to understand that the helmet is not an optional accessory. Surveillance has intensified with high-definition cameras and drones at the entrances to large cities, easily detecting those who start driving without adequate protection. In summary, while the V-16 beacon is a smart recommendation, the real risk to one's driving license lies in negligent helmet use.
