Accompanied by his lawyer David Montes, Sanginés assessed the Supreme Court (TS) ruling that exonerates him from charges stemming from a complaint filed by the family of a local businessman. Despite the acquittal, the politician expressed a “restrained joy” because the judicial process has stretched for nearly 17 years since the original incident.
“"It's not a full joy, because we see that the judicial system has failed."
The origin of the case dates back to his first term as island president, when alleged irregularities in the purchase of material by the Cabildo's Art, Culture and Tourism Centers were investigated. In this context, Sanginés again mentioned the name of Carlos Espino, who was a senior official of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) at that time.
During the press conference, the senator also criticized the work of magistrate Jerónimo Alonso, investigating judge in Arrecife, whom he called an “unjust judge,” thus reiterating previous statements on the same subject.
Despite the favorable resolution of his legal situation, Sanginés confirmed that he maintains his decision not to lead the CC list for the Cabildo in 2027. He even supported the possibility that Oswaldo Betancort, the current island president, will again be the number one candidate. Similarly, he ruled out being part of the CC list for the Arrecife City Council, suggesting that Echedey Eugenio, the current deputy mayor, will lead it within the framework of the pact between CC and the Popular Party (PP). It should be remembered that Sanginés was the second candidate in Arrecife in the 2023 elections, although he resigned his seat weeks later to be appointed as the Canarian representative in the Upper House.
