In May 2026, a total of 41,726 people in the Canary Islands were beneficiaries of a non-contributory pension. This figure represents a 1.0% decrease compared to the same month in 2025. The average amount received by these beneficiaries amounted to 652.1 euros per month, an increase of 11.9% compared to the previous year. These data come from the Non-Contributory Pensions Statistics published monthly by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
Non-contributory pensions are intended for individuals who lack sufficient resources to subsist and who have never contributed to Social Security or have not done so for the required time to qualify for contributory benefits. These pensions are divided into two types: invalidity and retirement.
In May, 16,043 people in the Canary Islands received the non-contributory invalidity pension, a 3.2% decrease from a year ago. The average for this benefit stood at 683.2 euros per month, 13.4% more than in May 2025.
On the other hand, non-contributory retirement pensions benefited 25,683 people, representing a 0.5% increase. The average monthly amount for this category was 632.6 euros, 11.0% higher than recorded in 2025.
The total expenditure to cover these non-contributory pensions in the Canary Islands reached 27.21 million euros, showing an increase of 10.8% compared to May 2025.
