The Bicácaro program, promoted by the Vice Ministry of Equality and Diversity of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood, and Families, has trained 1,882 teachers in the Canary Islands during the 2025/2026 academic year. The training actions focused on equality, diversity, and comprehensive sexual education, responding to 124 requests directed at teaching staff, families, and non-teaching personnel across all islands, except for La Gomera and La Graciosa.
With six years of trajectory, Bicácaro is consolidating its presence in the Canarian educational community. Initially focused on Early Childhood Education and Vocational Training Cycles, the program has expanded its offerings to all educational stages. In collaboration with the Area of Equality and Affective-Sexual Education of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sports, emphasis is placed on training teachers as key agents for fostering a culture of equality and respect for diversity in schools.
The training offer includes seven thematic areas, addressing issues such as gender diversity in the classroom, coeducation, new masculinities, and comprehensive sexual education. The evaluation at the end of the training actions reflects a very positive assessment from participants, who consider these contents useful and necessary for understanding and responding to the realities currently experienced by children and adolescents within the educational environment.
This academic year, the Bicácaro program has taken a further step in expanding its scope with the launch of a pilot experience in Comprehensive Sexual Education in collaboration with the General Directorate for the Protection of Children and Families. The initiative, developed since last May in five minors' centers across the archipelago, has trained 70 professionals from various associations and institutions and has involved 89 minors.
This pilot project is intended to be continuous and is projected to be progressively extended to centers on all islands, reinforcing the Government of the Canary Islands' commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and comprehensive sexual education adapted to the needs of different intervention areas.
