The general administrator of Radiotelevisión Canaria (RTVC), César Toledo, has stated that it is “excessive” for a single individual to lead a television station, within the context of a parliamentary debate concerning the public entity's management and the restructuring of its news programs.

Toledo's statement was made during the RTVC control commission meeting in the Parliament of Canarias, where he concurred with Nueva Canarias deputy, Carmen Hernández. The deputy had previously criticized the absence of oversight bodies, such as news councils or a control board, whose establishment awaits the approval of a new RTVC law. This situation, she argued, leads to “unipersonal” decisions regarding news services.
The discussion arose from a question posed by Hernández to the general administrator about an alleged daily one-hour reduction in news broadcast times, specifically for the program Buenos días, Canarias, information that Toledo himself had shared with the parliamentary commission in February.

"News programs constitute the backbone of Radiotelevisión Canaria's public service."

The deputy emphasized the critical role of news as a pillar of public service and advocated for strengthening control mechanisms, legally guaranteeing news content, establishing minimum broadcast hours, and ensuring all content is self-produced. She also stated that it is unacceptable for the quality of public service to be compromised by a lack of staff or technical resources.
In response, César Toledo clarified that there has been no daily one-hour reduction in news broadcasts, as had been interpreted. He reaffirmed that news programs are the backbone of the programming and the very essence of public radio and television.
He explained that, at the end of November 2025, the duration of Buenos días Canarias was temporarily reduced due to technical and staffing reasons, with the aim of reorganizing resources and updating the format. However, the news offering “has not been reduced, but rather reorganized and strengthened,” as the program La noche al día now starts half an hour earlier, at 06:30 AM, and Buenos días Canarias begins twenty minutes earlier, at 07:40 AM, additionally including a specific sports segment.
Toledo also highlighted that when current events demand it, coverage is extended without limitations, and news updates have been incorporated mid-morning and mid-afternoon. He concluded that, far from cutting back, the capacity for reaction and news presence has increased, maintaining the same overall volume of hours as at the beginning of the season.
