The Santa Cruz de La Palma City Council has approved the free transfer of municipal land to the Canarian Housing Institute (ICAVI) for the construction of protected housing, a key measure to address housing scarcity.
The decision, made in the municipal plenary session, received support from the governing group (PP-CC), Nueva Canarias, and partial backing from the PSOE, which cast one favorable vote and three abstentions. This initiative aims to respond to the growing demand for protected housing in the capital of La Palma and the scarcity of available land.

"With this transfer, we are taking a firm step to expand the protected housing stock in Santa Cruz de La Palma. This is a necessary measure to guarantee access to dignified housing, especially for young people and families who face difficulties in the current market."
Mayor Asier Antona highlighted that this action is part of a broader urban strategy, making public land available to the Government of the Canary Islands for the development of protected housing projects. He emphasized that it is a responsible measure that serves the general interest and a real demand from citizens.
The approved document justifies the transfer based on the public utility and social interest of the project, whose main objective is to reduce the housing deficit and improve access conditions in the municipality. Institutional collaboration is seen as a fundamental pillar for advancing housing solutions.

"Cooperation between administrations is fundamental to respond to one of the main current challenges, such as access to housing."
With this plenary approval, the Santa Cruz de La Palma City Council continues to advance its commitment to providing land for the construction of protected housing, thereby contributing to improving the quality of life for its citizens.
