The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has been recognized as the Spanish institution with the highest growth in scientific publications co-authored with business sector experts, according to the recent CYD Report 2025.
This report, which analyzes the performance of 82 Spanish universities, including all public ones, highlights the ULPGC's contribution to regional development through these collaborations. Over the past four years, publications in the knowledge transfer area increased by a remarkable 123%, surpassing the University of the Balearic Islands, which recorded a 61% increase.
The academic institution attributes this success to the efforts of its Knowledge Transfer Office (OTC), which has strengthened its role in identifying and valuing university knowledge, promoting effective transfer to the business and social spheres. A key indicator is the increase in collaborating companies, totaling 385 since 2014, with 120 of them initiating their cooperation in the last four years.
This dynamic has led to a greater number of joint publications between ULPGC experts and the business sector, in addition to fostering 218 R&D&i contracts and 35 transfer agreements. It has also facilitated the creation of 15 knowledge-based companies (start-ups and spin-offs) within the university itself. Currently, 71 research groups at the ULPGC maintain constant contact with the business fabric, covering areas such as computer science, artificial intelligence, electrical and mechanical engineering, legal sciences, and zoology.
The CYD Report also emphasizes the role of public universities in the Canary Islands in regional development, thanks to their close connection with businesses. The ULPGC's OTC has consolidated its position as a fundamental player in the national innovation system, earning official recognition and accreditation from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
