The mayor of Betancuria, Enrique Cerdeña, and the municipal secretary have appeared before the magistrate of the Court of Instruction and First Instance number 3 of Puerto del Rosario, denying any wrongdoing.

Both municipal officials testified on Thursday before the magistrate, facing accusations that include continuous administrative malfeasance, embezzlement of public funds, and workplace harassment. The Prosecutor's Office initiated the complaint, while a municipal worker has joined as a private prosecutor specifically for the alleged workplace harassment.

"No crime of any kind has been committed."

Raúl Miranda · Lawyer for the Mayor of Betancuria and the Municipal Secretary
The defense lawyer, Raúl Miranda, stated that his clients denied “all accusations, all facts,” arguing that there are “not even administrative infractions.” According to Miranda, the accusations are based on “interpretations of the law,” implying the absence of any legal infraction.
The lawyer expressed confidence that judicial proceedings will not be opened, but assured that, if necessary, they will face trial, convinced of the innocence of both. Regarding the complaint of workplace harassment, Miranda explained that the anti-harassment protocol was activated, but it could not be completed due to the lack of a solution from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Government of Canarias.
Enrique Cerdeña, representing Unidos por Betancuria, assumed the mayoralty of Betancuria in July 2024, succeeding Marcelino Cerdeña, who retired after 17 years in office.
