The municipalities of Valsequillo de Gran Canaria and Valsequillo de Córdoba have taken the first official step towards twinning, uniting two towns that share a name and spirit.

The mayor of Valsequillo de Gran Canaria, Juan Carlos Hernández Atta, accompanied by his government team, has formally announced the initiation of the twinning process with Valsequillo de Córdoba. The event took place in Plaza Tifariti, coinciding with the celebration of Canary Islands Day. Ana María Sánchez, mayor of Valsequillo de Córdoba, attended the event, traveling to the island with an expedition of 33 people, including councilors Emilia Durán and Diego Sánchez.
Ana María Sánchez recalled a visit by a Cordoban delegation to the island about 30 years ago and highlighted the hospitality received. She expressed her hope that a delegation from Valsequillo de Gran Canaria will visit Valsequillo de Córdoba on February 28, 2027, coinciding with Andalusia Day, mirroring the visit made this Saturday.
The Cordoban delegation was welcomed at the Town Hall, where the mayor signed the Book of Honor. Later, in Plaza Tifariti, Juan Carlos Hernández Atta announced the start of the process, which will require approval from the plenary sessions of both councils for validation.
Valsequillo de Córdoba, a municipality of approximately 350 inhabitants located in the Valle del Guadiato region, is known for its rural environment, historical richness, and tranquil lifestyle. Its mountainous and valley landscape makes it a suitable destination for rural tourism and outdoor activities. Throughout its history, it has been influenced by various cultures, leaving a significant architectural and cultural legacy.
Twinning traditionally aims to establish bonds of friendship and cooperation between municipalities to share problems and perspectives. The Cordoban delegation enjoyed a festive day in Valsequillo de Gran Canaria, which included craft displays, traditional games, Lucha Canaria and Bola Canaria exhibitions, and performances of traditional Canarian music by the Lomitos de Correa Folk Group and Parranda Medio Jigo Pal Kilo, as well as a theatrical performance depicting Canarian life.
