The Directorate General of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service has declared the viral meningitis outbreak, notified in October in El Hierro, closed after no new cases were detected.

The outbreak involved three pediatric patients, all male, aged three, six, and seven, who were students at the Tigaday Infant and Primary Education Center in the municipality of La Frontera. The children required hospitalization but all showed favorable clinical evolution and have since been discharged.
The first case began showing symptoms in early October, and the last confirmed case in mid-October. Following the confirmation of the first case, the established protocol for contact tracing and alerting local health professionals was activated, leading to no further detected infections. Consequently, this Friday, October 30th, the episode is considered closed.
Viral meningitis, primarily caused by enteroviruses, typically results in complete recovery with rare severe symptoms. Manifestations include sudden onset fever, intense headache, and neck stiffness, potentially accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and pharyngitis. Symptoms usually last 10 to 14 days.
Most enterovirus infections are asymptomatic or cause mild, non-specific febrile illnesses. Enteroviruses have a human reservoir and are mainly transmitted person-to-person via fecal-oral contact, with asymptomatic individuals often being the source of infection. The incubation period is estimated between two days and two weeks.
Key preventive measures focus on reinforcing hygiene habits in family, school, and institutional settings. Recommendations include frequent hand washing with soap and water, as enteroviruses are resistant to alcohol-based sanitizers. Disinfection of surfaces with diluted bleach and the use of disposable hygiene materials are also advised. Affected children should remain home until cleared by their pediatrician.
