Following the seismic movements registered in the state of La Guaira, the Cabildo of El Hierro has resolved to accelerate aid directed towards its residents in Venezuela. The island institution is in constant communication with support organizations in the country to gain a clear picture of the situation of those affected and identify potential social and health requirements.
The president of the council, Alpidio Armas, expressed his concern regarding the consequences of the seismic events, conveying the institution's solidarity with the Venezuelan people and the Spanish citizens residing there.
Armas recalled the direct connection of the emergency to Venezuela, but also to numerous Canarian families who maintain personal, familial, and emotional ties with the South American nation. In the case of El Hierro, this link holds particular significance due to the presence of emigrants from El Hierro and their descendants in various regions of the country.
“"At this time, we have decided to activate the planned subsidies for the Civil Association Amigos del Garoé and España Salud. Our priority is that the resources reach those who may need them as soon as possible."
The Cabildo will immediately proceed with activating the subsidies intended for the Civil Association Amigos del Garoé and España Salud. These two organizations are regular interlocutors in assisting residents from El Hierro and their descendants in Venezuela, particularly in situations of social vulnerability or medical need. The measure aims to ensure funds reach those who may require assistance promptly after the seismic emergency.
The island institution does not rule out implementing additional actions once a more detailed assessment of the damages and the actual needs of the El Hierro community in Venezuela is available. Potential measures include utilizing the Contingency Fund or processing an extraordinary credit to bolster the economic response if the initial aid proves insufficient. This decision will be based on information received from entities working on the ground and the evolution of the emergency.
The insular president reiterated that the Cabildo is following the effects of the two earthquakes in Venezuela with "sadness and concern," emphasizing the importance of determining if any residents from El Hierro or their descendants are affected and how to effectively channel aid through collaborating organizations.
