The Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (IMLCF) of Santa Cruz de Tenerife anticipates a special support device for the forensic service in El Hierro due to the increase in migrant boats and the possibility of deceased individuals arriving.

The Directorate General of Relations with the Justice Administration will activate the deployment of professionals from Tenerife, if necessary, to ensure that medical-forensic care provided to the resident population on El Hierro is not affected by the migratory situation.
This preventive measure aims to guarantee the continuity of the service in the face of incoming vessels and the potential for deaths at sea.
As part of the support measures, the Department of the Presidency acquired a refrigerated chamber with a capacity for six bodies and managed the purchase of a container for the migrant assistance device in El Hierro. These resources were made available to the state assistance unit, managed by the Red Cross.
The Department thus responded to a direct request from the NGO, despite it not being a direct responsibility of the Government of the Canary Islands, in order to ensure dignified treatment for the deceased. The refrigerated chamber has been operational since November 2024.
