A tuna fishing boat sank at Naos dock in Arrecife, activating the Plateca pre-alert for marine pollution and mobilizing municipal collaboration.

The Port Authority of Las Palmas has informed the Arrecife City Council that there are no apparent risks of marine contamination affecting the bay following the sinking of a tuna fishing boat at the Naos dock, in the capital of Lanzarote. The incident occurred yesterday morning.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has been in direct contact with the director of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, Francisco Javier Trujillo Ramírez. The aim was to understand the details of the deployment activated to control potential marine pollution and to assess the need to declare the Municipal Emergency Plan (PUMA) due to the fishing boat's diesel spill, which could reach Arrecife bay and its beaches.
The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands declared the Plateca pre-alert yesterday, Tuesday, due to a marine pollution incident in Arrecife. The vessel involved, the tuna seiner Monte Arballu, was docked near the old Frigorsa area, in the fishing zone of Puerto de Naos. The boat carried approximately 10,000 liters of diesel, and a fuel slick measuring about 30 by 15 meters has been detected.
The Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) deployed maritime anti-pollution barriers yesterday morning. The mayor had expressed concern about the potential spread of the diesel spill towards Arrecife bay, where several beaches are located.
Initial efforts to keep the fishing boat afloat were unsuccessful, and it eventually sank within the port, next to its mooring line in Naos.
The mayor has requested that all necessary collaboration be provided to the boat's small owner to ensure they promptly receive the aid and assistance needed for the vessel's refloating, repair, and subsequent fishing operations.
The City Council has offered the cooperation of municipal personnel, coordinated by the Department of Security and Emergencies led by councilor Kevin Cortés, to the Port Authority of Las Palmas and the Consortium of Security and Emergencies of Lanzarote.
