Large protest in Arrecife, Lanzarote, demanding the continuity of the Hospital Insular.

A massive demonstration, estimated at 7,000 attendees, marched through the streets of Arrecife on Saturday to defend the continuity of the Hospital Insular, an emblematic healthcare facility with 75 years of service.

Convened by the Marea Blanca platform, the march started from Islas Canarias park and concluded in front of the hospital. Participants, mostly dressed in white, carried a banner with the slogan 'For dignified public healthcare' and were accompanied by the Marakumbé batucada group.
During the event, a manifesto was read criticizing the lack of a defined project, sufficient budget, and a binding execution timeline for the hospital's modernization. Spokesperson Yasmina Tabares, alongside the renowned health professional Domingo de Guzmán, expressed discontent regarding the potential closure of Hospital Insular to transfer services to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa without clear guidelines or defined investment.
The attendees strongly applauded messages highlighting how the hospital's closure would negatively impact the cohesion, equity, and sustainability of the public healthcare system. The mobilization included the presence of public officials from the PSOE and NC parties, though without party insignia.
Further protest actions are planned for the coming weeks, and a signature collection campaign on change.org will continue throughout the summer to maintain visibility for the demand.
