The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has cordoned off the El Perchel promenade and is considering sealing it for safety reasons, following significant damage caused by storm Therese in late March.

Storm Therese, which impacted Gran Canaria in late March, left the El Perchel promenade, located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in a very poor state. Faced with this situation, the City Council found it necessary to cordon off the area and is evaluating the possibility of sealing it, a measure that the Urban Planning Department considers the most likely for safety reasons.
The Beaches Department, led by councilor Yilenia Vega, was the first to report the damage. After observing sections of railing torn off and detached planks, official notices were sent to Security and Urban Discipline to inspect the site and propose the most appropriate actions to ensure public safety.
An Urban Planning technician visited the area on Thursday and, given the severity of the damage, decided to preventively cordon off the most affected part. The department anticipates that this action is likely a precursor to the official sealing of the promenade.
Once the area is secured, the next question is who will bear the cost of the repairs. Although the promenade was built by a private company with an investment exceeding two million euros, the damage is located on public domain land, complicating the determination of responsibility.
The promenade, part of the Resort Cordial Santa Águeda, is only six years old. With 384 linear meters and 1,800 square meters of surface area, it pedestrianly connects the fishing villages of El Pajar, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and La Playa de Arguineguín, in Mogán. Although open to the public, its construction was part of the urbanization works for a leisure and accommodation complex that includes the Perchel Beach Club, one of the largest beach clubs in the Canary Islands, and 87 luxury holiday homes.
The promotion of this complex and the promenade was a joint initiative by Be Cordial Hotels & Resorts, the footballer from Arguineguín David Jiménez Silva, and the del Castillo family.
