The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura organized an event at the Archaeological Museum of Fuerteventura, in Betancuria, to recognize the work of women in the rural Majorero world. The initiative, part of Rural Women's Day (October 15th), honored a total of six women for their contribution to the sector.
The honorees are: livestock entrepreneur Margot Robayna Alonso (Betancuria), cheese producer Alicia Martínez (Antigua), rural woman Asunción Alonso Viera (La Oliva), Toto livestock entrepreneur Teresa del Pino Hernández Ramos (Pájara), María Jesús Rodríguez Vera (Puerto del Rosario), and Carmen Delia Suález Peña (Tuineje), president of the Association of Majorero Field Producers.
The awards were presented by various authorities, including the President of the Cabildo, Lola García, and the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Enrique Pérez, accompanied by municipal representatives and sector directors.
“"It is important to thank the work of so many women who have dedicated their lives to supporting their families, working the land, and keeping our traditions alive, and to do so in a place so linked to our history as Betancuria. A history that has been built with the daily work of women."
The event also featured musical performances by Domingo Saavedra and Marey Martín, and was attended by neighbors, friends, and family of the honorees, who shared in the recognition of these women.
