The Fuerteventura Cabildo League of Latin Sailboats begins a new season with 13 registered boats. The competition will consist of eight race days to be held between August and October in the waters of Puerto del Rosario. The official presentation and the start of the League took place this Saturday at the Insular Nautical Center.
The first race day was held last Saturday, August 29, and the calendar will extend until October 17 with races in the bay of Puerto del Rosario, between Playa Blanca and Punta Gaviota. This league is the core of the official season for Latin sailboats in Fuerteventura, and from it will emerge the eight boats that will represent the Island in the Canary Islands Championship, which will also be held in Puerto del Rosario.
The Minister of Sports, Luis González, thanked the clubs for their efforts and the municipalities for their support in making this event a unifying force for the island, aiming to keep Majorero Latin sailing strong. The President of the Insular Federation, Pascual Perdomo, expressed his pride in the increase in registered boats, while the Vice President of the Canary Islands Federation, Ana Curbelo, congratulated the insular federation on its achievements.
The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, highlighted the high participation and the aid granted by the City Council and the Cabildo to sports clubs. Representatives from La Oliva and Pájara also thanked the federations and the Cabildo for their work. The event was also attended by representatives from the Port Authority.
The discipline is experiencing a period of growth, with an increase in federative licenses from 60 to 105, notably the female participation with 25 licenses and an all-female boat, unique in the Canary Islands. The competition also incorporates new generations with crew members aged between 15 and 18, current champions of the School Games, and new teams alongside long-standing boats from Corralejo, Puerto del Rosario, and Jandía.
The races will take place on Saturdays, August 29, September 5, 12, and 26, and October 10 and 17, with some double race days, in the bay of Puerto del Rosario. They can be followed live via the Facebook page of the Insular Federation of Latin Sailboats of Fuerteventura.
The calendar will culminate at the end of October with the XXXV Canary Islands Championship of Latin Sailboats in Puerto del Rosario, bringing together the qualified boats from the different islands. This event consolidates Fuerteventura as the host of a traditional discipline.
The 2026 season further boosts Majorero Latin sailing with increased participation, the inclusion of young people and women, and the establishment of a Latin sailing school with support from the Cabildo, as well as the ‘Sailboat School / Latin Sailing School’ program to introduce the discipline to the island's educational centers.
