During his speech at the Youth Insular Center in Puerto del Rosario, the veteran communicator warned about how Artificial Intelligence has altered the perception of reality. According to his analysis, the ability to generate synthetic images has caused the journalistic maxim that a picture is worth a thousand words to lose its validity, creating doubts even about truthful events.
The speaker noted that the profession is going through a complex period marked by the proliferation of hoaxes and the influence of social media. In this context, he stressed that the search for truth must be the constant horizon of the journalist, avoiding falling into trench journalism that prioritizes political polarization over fact-checking.
“"The truth must be worked on hard to find it and, in any case, the truth has subjective elements. In reality, I propose the search for truth as a horizon."
Regarding information management, the presenter defended the need to maintain neutrality and focus on verifiable facts. He criticized the current trend of seeking approval through algorithms, describing it as a serious mistake for media outlets to base their work on seeking quick reactions rather than on journalistic rigor.
The series of talks, organized by the Department of Education and Youth of the Cabildo, is supported by entities such as the Disa Foundation, Mapfre, the University of La Laguna, and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
