The Insular Water Council of Fuerteventura (CIAF) has approved the preliminary documents for the Insular Hydrological Plan and the Flood Risk Management Plan, initiating the development of their initial versions for the 2027-2033 cycle.

The Insular Water Council of Fuerteventura (CIAF) has taken a significant step in the island's water planning by definitively approving the preliminary documents for two crucial plans: the Insular Hydrological Plan (PHI) and the Flood Risk Management Plan (PGRI) for the Fuerteventura Hydrographic Demarcation, both corresponding to the 2027-2033 planning cycle.
The General Council of the CIAF, in an extraordinary session held on September 29, gave the green light to the consolidated documents from the preliminary and initial stages of both plans. With this approval, the phase of developing the initial versions now begins, which will include the corresponding Strategic Environmental Assessment, to be evaluated and reviewed every six years.
The Insular Hydrological Plan is a fundamental tool for water management in Fuerteventura, detailing the planning for its use and conservation. According to the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, "The third cycle of the PHI is already in effect with measures underway or already executed, and now we are working on the fourth cycle to continue planning medium and long-term measures."
For its part, the Flood Risk Management Plan addresses prevention, protection, and preparedness for potential floods, including early warning systems adapted to the characteristics of the hydrographic basin.
Both the insular president, Lola García, and the Water Councilor, Adargoma Hernández, have praised the work of the CIAF technical staff in revising and updating these plans. The approved documents integrate the allegations and suggestions received during the public information and consultation processes with administrations, organizations, and interested entities.
Additionally, the General Council of the CIAF approved the request to initiate the procedure for a joint ordinary Strategic Environmental Assessment for the fourth cycle of the PHI and the third cycle of the PGRI. These documents will be sent to the Vice-Ministry of Territorial Planning and Demographic Challenge of the Government of the Canary Islands, the competent environmental body, for the elaboration of the Scope Document for the Strategic Environmental Assessment.
The agreements, adopted unanimously, along with the consolidated documents, will be published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) and will be available for consultation on the hydraulic administration's website (www.aguasfuerteventura.com).
