The Mauritanian Women's Sociocultural Association DIMBE is holding its Intercultural Week from July 22-25 in Puerto del Rosario, with the support of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario, and Cajamar. The event aims to foster coexistence, respect for diversity, and citizen participation through a program including conferences, dialogue sessions, cultural activities, sports, music, and gastronomy.
The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, highlighted that the island is an open and diverse place where people from different backgrounds coexist, and that initiatives like this strengthen that coexistence through mutual understanding and dialogue. The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, emphasized the cultural diversity of the municipality and the island, underscoring the importance of the scheduled cultural, artistic, and sports activities.
Hawa Touré, president of DIMBE, explained that the Intercultural Week responds to the need to create spaces for coexistence to strengthen relationships among the different communities present on the island, using culture as a tool for integration and social transformation.
The program will begin on July 22 with the conference ‘Between Two Shores: Mauritania and the Canary Islands’, addressing the historical and social links between both territories. The sessions will continue with activities on cultural heritage, youth, equality, human rights, and the eradication of female genital mutilation.
The event will conclude with a day dedicated to sports, music, and gastronomy, including a meeting of Canarian wrestling and Senegalese traditional wrestling as a symbol of intercultural dialogue. The activities will combine reflection, dialogue, and cultural proposals open to all citizens, addressing topics such as cooperation between the Canary Islands and Africa and women's leadership.
