All groups represented in the Plenary of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura have urged the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to incorporate the stop in Puerto del Rosario into the Public Service Obligation (PSO) and to reinstate the maritime route as soon as possible.
The direct maritime connection with the Peninsula is considered a strategic line for the Island, crucial for the transport of goods and passengers, and for social and economic development. However, the Ministry has confirmed that the stop in Puerto del Rosario is not part of the PSO, but was offered as a voluntary improvement by the contracted company, which has led to its recent suspension, forcing intermediate stops in other ports of the Archipelago.
This situation, initially denounced by the Cabildo and the Town Hall of Puerto, causes significant harm to Fuerteventura by increasing logistical costs and affecting the competitiveness of businesses, the primary sector, commerce, and the general citizenry.
The motion's text highlights that Fuerteventura, with over 130,000 inhabitants and nearly three million annual visitors, is experiencing one of the highest demographic growths in the Canary Islands, requiring stable maritime connections that meet its real needs.
Therefore, the insular Corporation urges the Ministry of Transport and the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy to incorporate the stop in Puerto del Rosario mandatorily and permanently into the PSO. Furthermore, it requests the Ministry to adopt measures to immediately restore the direct maritime connection while the new tender process is underway.
This initiative is part of an institutional united front promoted by the Cabildo, with the support of the Island's six town halls and the Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura.
The motion approved today also urges the Government of the Canary Islands to institutionally support its content in order to defend before the State the incorporation of the stop as a PSO, considering Fuerteventura's demographic, economic, and territorial reality.
