During the first six months of 2026, residents of Fuerteventura deposited a total of 2,697 tons of glass packaging waste, representing an increase of over 200 tons compared to the same period in 2025. This achievement places the majorera island at the forefront of glass recycling, alongside Lanzarote, and above the Spanish average.
In Fuerteventura, the average glass recycling per inhabitant reaches 35.9 kilograms (more than 120 containers per person annually), surpassing the national average of 20 kilograms per inhabitant (68 containers per person). This success is distributed across the more than 1,000 green containers located throughout the island.
The growth in recycling of light packaging, paper, and cardboard is also notable. According to the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, these improvements are due to investments driven by the island corporation to optimize waste treatment and, fundamentally, to increasing citizen awareness, which is key to moving towards a circular and sustainable economy.
The Minister of Waste, Enrique Pérez, highlighted the Cabildo's efforts in improving transfer plants, machinery, and implementing a mobile clean point. Additionally, selective collection has been reinforced with the acquisition of new side-loading containers and awareness campaigns.
Jorge Lorenzo, manager of Ecovidrio in the Canary Islands, confirmed Fuerteventura's strong performance and the commitment of citizens and the administration to the circular economy, anticipating better results for 2026.
To facilitate this increase, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and Ecovidrio have reinforced the containerization infrastructure, installing new points in municipalities such as Pájara, Tuineje, and la Oliva. Currently, Fuerteventura has one container per 126 inhabitants, exceeding the Spanish average of one container per 188 inhabitants.
