The defense of sustainable and artisanal fishing in Fuerteventura has reached the European Parliament thanks to the efforts of the island's PSOE party. Socialist MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar was responsible for presenting the sector's challenges to the European chamber.
It is criticized that the European Union (EU) itself does not apply its specific directives for Outermost Regions (ORs) in fisheries matters. This results in "irrational requirements," such as the imposition of digital logbooks, which hinder the work of local fishermen.
“"The key to sustainable fishing is summarized as 'one man, one hook,' and protecting the artisanal fishing activity of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands against industrial fishing operations capable of depleting island fishing grounds."
This is the strong defense of small-scale fishing made by José Cabrera, head of the primary sector for the PSOE of Fuerteventura, who emphasizes the need to protect fishing grounds from industrial fishing.
