The 'Fuerteventura, Bonita por Naturaleza' program, promoted by the Island Council (Cabildo), carried out a wide range of maintenance and improvement actions during the past month of May. The work focused on roads, tourist areas, urban centers, trails, ravines, and heritage elements across different municipalities of the island.
Program crews intervened in locations such as Costa Calma, El Castillo, Gran Tarajal, Tiscamanita, Betancuria, Lobos, Cofete, and Sicasumbre. Actions included general cleaning, vegetation clearing, waste removal, palm tree pruning, trail conditioning, restoration of dry stone walls, and public space improvements.
The assessment of these interventions highlights shock actions aimed at enhancing the safety and image of urban and tourist zones, as well as conservation efforts for the traditional landscape, natural watercourses, trails, and rural heritage of Fuerteventura.
In Costa Calma, over 400 cubic meters of plant waste and garbage were removed from pedestrian corridors and public land. Additionally, seven safety corridors were cleared, and work was done on the drainage system under the FV-2 to improve water evacuation.
In El Castillo, the work covered 1,200 linear meters and over 2,000 square meters along the margins of the FV-2, the bike lane, and an underground pedestrian crossing, aiming to optimize safety in a high-traffic area.
Gran Tarajal saw the phytosanitary treatment and pruning of 223 palm trees in garden areas, including the Félix López park and main avenues, in coordination with the Tuineje City Council.
Tiscamanita witnessed the restoration of dry stone walls and traditional agricultural terraces (gavias), improvements to the public parking area's drainage, and the installation of a new wooden pergola over the plaza's stage.
In the vicinity of Betancuria, channel cleaning continued, covering over six linear kilometers and rehabilitating nearly 1,700 meters of dry stone walls across various ravines.
On the islet of Lobos, over 200 meters of the trail leading to the natural space's highest point were improved, using local stone to delineate the path and reduce environmental impact.
Cofete hosted manual cleaning and clearing work around the Casa del Arrendatario, a historic building previously restored by the Cabildo.
Finally, in Sicasumbre, cleaning and tidying were carried out at the parking area and the astronomical viewpoint, continuing improvements initiated last year.
