The NGO Mundo Nuevo, responsible for managing these resources, has announced the closure of the Ayagaures and Ancor centers in Fuerteventura, each with a capacity for approximately 20 minors. The decision, effective July 1st, is attributed to "economic reasons," according to the organization.
The CC OO union denounces that this measure will leave 42 workers unemployed, as they have not been offered relocation alternatives by the association. Zayda González Cedrés, coordinator of Social Intervention for the Federation of Services to Citizenship of CC OO Canarias, stated that the staff was informed on Tuesday, leaving them "no time to react."
The Ancor facility, which opened seven years ago, had maintained its labor conditions "frozen" since the beginning of the migratory emergency. The union criticizes that, after such a long period of high demand, a new tender has not been conducted to update salary conditions, which have remained "frozen for seven years."
“"We expect a new tender to be carried out and conditions similar to those in the sector and all ordinary resources to be established."
Despite the Government of the Canary Islands proposing a regularization of the situation, the offer has not been satisfactory to the association's representatives, according to González.
González also criticized that the closure occurs shortly after the visit of Pope León XIV to the islands, during which the importance of welcoming and dignifying migrants was emphasized. The coordinator laments that the minors "bear the brunt of it all," as they will be transferred to other centers, losing the integration and bond with their current educators.
The CC OO union adds that this situation is not exclusive to Fuerteventura, indicating that at least three centers have reportedly closed recently in Gran Canaria. They emphasize the difficulty of finding qualified personnel in a "very precarious" sector.
Finally, CC OO calls for transparency from third-sector entities and the Canarian Government, demanding respect for workers and adherence to legal deadlines in cases of collective dismissals.
