Basketball player Aday Mara, with deep roots in the Canary Islands, has made history by becoming the first Spaniard to win the prestigious NCAA Championship title in the United States.

The recent university champion is the son of Angélica Geli, an iconic volleyball figure in Tenerife. Geli, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1973, is recognized as one of the most outstanding athletes from the islands in her discipline.
During her career, Angélica Geli represented the national team on 178 occasions and accumulated five league championships with Club Voleibol Tenerife, in addition to one with Vóley Murcia. After retiring from indoor volleyball, she ventured into beach volleyball, participating in world championships and even a qualifying round for the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.
Despite the strong family connection to the Canary Islands, Aday Mara was born in Zaragoza. His birth in the Aragonese capital was due to his mother moving there to accompany her husband, Javier Mara, who was also a basketball player and played for clubs such as Cai Zaragoza. This athletic heritage has significantly influenced Aday's passion for basketball.
After making his debut at just 16 years old with Basket Zaragoza and his recent success in American university basketball, Mara is preparing to make the leap to the NBA, considered the world's premier league.
