Canarian sailor María Cantero, from the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria (RCNGC), alongside Balearic Olympian Paula Barceló, secured a bronze medal in the 49er FX class at the 55th Princesa Sofía Trophy in Mallorca. This achievement marks the first of five medals that Canarian sailing earned in a single day across various national events.
In the Spanish Optimist Championship, Lola Carrión, from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife (RCNA), was crowned national champion in the U-13 category. Meanwhile, the Spanish 420 Championship saw island sailing teams reach the podium three times.
The pair formed by Luis Mesa and Miguel Padrón, both from the RCNGC, claimed the title of Spanish champions in the U-19 male category. Additionally, the crews of Miguel and Natalia Méndez, and Marta Mansito and María Sánchez, respectively, earned bronze medals in the mixed and U-17 female categories.
The Optimist selection from the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation, comprising twenty sailors, also had a notable performance, finishing third by autonomous teams in the Spanish Championship held in Getxo. Over fifty sailors from various islands and classes participated in international and national regattas during Holy Week.
The most outstanding result was that of María Cantero and Paula Barceló in the regatta that opens the international Olympic season and is the first of the Sailing Grand Slam 2026 circuit. Despite leading the competition until the final day, where they lost the gold in the last two medal races, their bronze is a significant milestone. Nine Canarian sailors competed in this edition of the Princesa Sofía Trophy, with Isabel Hernández (RCNGC) standing out as the first Spanish sailor in ILCA 6.
