CB Gran Canaria has been relegated to the Primera FEB after a disastrous season, marked by only ten wins and 24 losses, ending a streak of 31 consecutive campaigns in the Liga Endesa. The loss of category was sealed on the final matchday, despite the team not having been in a relegation spot until that critical moment.
In light of this situation, the Gran Canaria Cabildo, owner of the entity, faces the necessity of establishing a new strategy to ensure a swift return to the Liga ACB. As a first step, the resignation of Sitapha Savané, who had presided over the club since 2022 and was renewed until 2027, has been accepted, acknowledging his institutional and sporting responsibility for the failure.
The president of the island institution, Antonio Morales, and the Sports Minister, Aridany Romero, will appear to assess the season and bid farewell to Savané, while also aiming to convey a message of continued support and an ambitious project to regain the lost category.
The club's ownership is also considering the possibility of dispensing with the role of an executive president. However, the lack of a defined replacement delays the establishment of a new roadmap, although efforts are being made to accelerate the search to calm the social atmosphere and focus efforts on the promotion objective.
Concurrently, the dismissal of sporting director Willy Villar, in charge since 2020 and renewed until 2027, who has also been blamed for the dismal season, will proceed.
Regarding the squad, only Miquel Salvó and Carlos Alocén have contracts valid for the upcoming season, while Eric Vila and Kur Kuath have exit clauses. The future of these players, who have interest in the ACB, will depend on the next sporting director, whose selection might include an internal promotion. The club faces a necessary reset and the assimilation of its new reality in the Primera FEB.
