The Gran Canaria Council has launched a grant call totaling 250,000 euros for the acquisition of bibliographic and documentary collections, aiming to strengthen the island's municipal library network and promote reading.

This initiative, managed by the Culture department, seeks to increase the resources available in Gran Canaria's municipal libraries. The call, which represents an increase of over 100,000 euros compared to the previous edition, will prioritize applications for fund acquisition during the current year, especially those for libraries open to the public for at least 20 hours per week.
All Gran Canaria municipalities with their own library, as well as public entities dependent on them that manage cultural activities, can benefit from these grants. A minimum of 5 percent of the total allocation must be used for purchasing works by Canarian authors and themes, or editions produced in the Canary Islands, and at least 10 percent for comics, graphic novels, and manga.
For granting the subsidies, the Council will consider various criteria, such as the municipality's population according to INE 2025 data, the number of library service points, opening hours, active members, loans made last year, and the economic contribution allocated by each municipality for bibliographic acquisitions in the current budget year.
Beneficiary libraries will need to justify the acquired funds by the end of 2026, in accordance with the grant requirements. The maximum deadline for this justification will be until March 31, 2027. Applications can now be submitted electronically through the insular Corporation's electronic registry, and municipalities have until June 3, 2026, to formalize their requests, following the publication of the call in the Official Provincial Gazette.
