Gran Canaria island, representing Spain, hosted the final stop of the prestigious K-1 World Max world circuit. After an international tour through countries such as Italy, Brazil, Australia, Greece, Romania, Holland, and Russia, the archipelago has established itself as a key venue for organizing top-tier sporting events, thanks to the efforts of Fight Events and the Canarian Federation of Kickboxing and Muay Thai.
The event's star was the Spanish fighter Sergio 'Dinamita' Sánchez, who claimed the tournament championship by defeating Portugal's Fabio Veiga in the final. The bout, decided in an extra round, was vibrant and closely contested, earning Sánchez a spot in the semifinals of the world circuit finals later this year in Yokohama.
The local fans responded with great enthusiasm, creating a special atmosphere at the Gran Canaria Arena and offering unwavering support to the competitors, particularly the Spanish fighters. Fabio Veiga had reached the final after defeating local fighter Alcorac Caballero in the semifinals, while Sergio Sánchez advanced by overcoming France's Alan Leveque in another exciting and balanced match.
Other notable fights included a clear victory for Sergio Alcaide against Antonio Campoy. The participation of young talents such as Alejandro Delgado, Marcos Betancort, Cytnhia Curquejo, Cynthia Monzón, Bryan Maceo, and Aythami Medina rounded out a historic night for martial arts.
Beyond the fights, the event stood out for its spectacular staging, enhanced by live music, exhibitions, and displays of Canarian traditions, offering a comprehensive entertainment experience.
The Minister of Sports for the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Aridany Romero, described the day as 'historic,' emphasizing how the event promotes the Gran Canaria brand internationally. The organization, represented by Néstor Navarro (president of the Canarian Federation of Kickboxing and Muay Thai) and Ney Montesdeoca, expressed their satisfaction with the tournament's success, thanking the trust placed in the island.
The K-1 World MAX confirms the strong momentum of contact sports in Canarias and reinforces the Gran Canaria Arena as a premier venue for international sporting events. The event was organized by Fight Events and sponsored by the Insular Institute of Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Municipal Institute of Sports of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, and the Department of Sports of the Government of Canarias, with support from federations and private sponsors.
