The young boy has come back to Gran Canaria following a prolonged battle against the disease, which included months of intensive treatment in Madrid. His father shared the emotional story, emphasizing the crucial role of solidarity in his son's recovery.
“"An anonymous person from Poland decided to donate 100% compatible bone marrow to my son, and thanks to him, today my son is alive."
This altruistic act has been fundamental for the child to start a new chapter. His father stressed the importance of bone marrow donation, debunking myths and explaining that the process is simple and safe, similar to a blood donation.
Despite the joy of his return, the path to full recovery still presents challenges. The child suffers from sequelae of the treatment, such as necrosis, osteoporosis, and microfractures. Furthermore, the family faces bureaucracy to get the Canarian administration to authorize the start of his rehabilitation in Vecindario.
“"Donating bone marrow saves lives, and I'm telling you this as someone who is going through it. It's not a beautiful slogan to sound good on the radio, it's not a catchphrase, it's a reality, and we are living this reality firsthand."
The child's treatment concluded on December 25, and he must wait six months to complete his vaccination schedule before returning to school in September for fourth grade. Despite the wait, he has already had an emotional reunion with his classmates.
