In an extraordinary Government Council meeting held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria approved the emergency declaration for 18 construction projects. These works will focus on restoring 21 roads within the island's network that suffered significant damage due to storm Therese.
This measure allows for the immediate awarding of repair contracts, especially for the ten roads in the worst condition, where work had already begun more than fifteen days prior, even while the storm was still active. The Public Works Department initially estimates the cost of these 18 actions at 13.39 million euros, though this figure may vary as the works progress.
Storm Therese battered the island between March 19 and 26, primarily affecting the southern, central, and summit areas. The intensity of the rain and wind led to the closure of up to 25 roads on a single day, March 24. A total of 21 roads in the island network sustained significant damage, including undermining, landslides, and subsidence.
In response, Public Works immediately activated emergency efforts on the first eight projects, covering the ten most damaged roads, in collaboration with the companies responsible for road maintenance. Concurrently, the emergency declaration for all actions was processed and ratified this Thursday.
This approval will facilitate the almost immediate awarding of contracts for the remaining ten projects, encompassing another eleven roads, with the aim of restoring normalcy and connectivity across the entire island network. The Public Works Department has several companies with immediate execution capacity, thanks to their availability of human and material resources, experience in similar projects, and knowledge of the operational territory.
These works are deemed necessary for «immediate execution» to eliminate situations posing a serious, certain, and imminent risk to the physical integrity of road users. Among the ten roads where work is proceeding most rapidly are the GC-60 (connecting Tejeda with Maspalomas, near Ayacata), the GC-15 (between San Mateo and Tejeda), the GC-608 (La Culata), the GC-400 (Ariñez), the GC-550 (Temisas), the GC-210 section (between La Aldea and El Parralillo), the GC-200 (access to Tirma), the GC-654 (Risco Blanco) and GC-655 (Hoya de Tunte in San Bartolomé de Tirajana) roads, and the GC-607 (El Chorrillo in Tejeda).
