This initiative, designed for all ages, aligns with the theme proposed by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for this year: “Museums uniting a divided world.” The goal is to highlight the role of these institutions as spaces for encounter and dialogue.
The activities will kick off with an institutional event on Saturday, May 16, at 7:00 PM, in the Plaza del Pilar Nuevo in the capital of Gran Canaria, coinciding with European Museum Night. This public gathering aims to foster collective reflection on the function of museums in contemporary society.
During the event, the manifesto for International Museum Day will be read, with participation from institutional representatives, officials from the Museum Service, and directors of the island's various museum centers. The day will conclude with the concert Acordes de paz (Chords of Peace), a musical proposal promoting values such as empathy and coexistence.
“"Museums are spaces capable of building bridges between cultures, generations, and communities, fostering dialogue, inclusion, and the construction of a shared memory."
The island's museum network, which includes the Casa de Colón, the Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós, the Casa-Museo León y Castillo, the Casa-Museo Antonio Padrón, the Centro de Arte Indigenista, the Casa-Museo Tomás Morales, and the Museo y Parque Arqueológico Cueva Pintada, will join this commemoration with specific programs at each of their locations.
