The arrival of Pope Leo XIV in Gran Canaria has generated unprecedented mobilization on the island. The general coordinator of the event highlighted that both registrations for the multitudinous Eucharist and the number of volunteers have exceeded initial expectations, reflecting the great interest surrounding this historic event.
Registrations continue to rise, with many parishes already reporting over a hundred faithful signed up. The educational community of Catholic schools has also shown great enthusiasm for participating in groups. To facilitate the process, individual and group registrations have been enabled through the official website, in addition to in-person support points at the Casa de la Iglesia, parishes in Telde, Vecindario, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino in Teror, where volunteers assist with registration.
“"The faithful are encouraged to register through their parishes to go as a community to the celebration."
This event is considered of great magnitude, even by non-believers, who describe it as “the most important historical visit that can be experienced in our islands.” The figure of the Pope is seen not only as the successor of Saint Peter but also as a global leader, which gives his presence a transcendental character for the entire archipelago. The emotion is palpable among the faithful, especially with the confirmation that the mass altar will be presided over by the images of the Virgen del Pino and the Santo Cristo de Telde, symbols of deep roots on the island.
The response to the call for volunteers has been equally impressive, with 1,899 people registered as of last Friday, far exceeding expectations. These volunteers will be fundamental in the organization, taking charge of tasks such as information desk assistance, registration support, protocol management, security, and healthcare.
“"We call for patience and serenity."
Given the anticipation of long waits to access the stadium for security and mobility reasons, a call for patience and serenity has been made. The availability of water points, restrooms, and food will be guaranteed to make the wait more bearable and allow attendees to fully experience the day leading up to the celebration of the mass.
